I acquired “Different Drummer” in the spring of 2019 when she came to the market for the first time ever, though I was the happy owner of a beautiful 1992 PSC Ericson 34-II at the time. I was seeking a classic ocean-going cruising boat, and I found her!  She is incredible to sail, as you all know.  Extraordinarily well balanced.  She only asks for two fingers on her tiller in 40 kts of wind, double reefed with the staysail flying.  The main has a third reef if you prefer.  I’m selling due to a recent divorce and my relocation away from Lake Michigan.

This is a two-owner vessel.  She has never been out of the fresh water of the Great Lakes.  During the 6-to-7-month offseason on Lake Michigan she has been stored indoors (unheated).  She comes with a custom-built steel cradle. Different Drummer is virtually unmodified from the original build.

The teak and mahogany on Different Drummer was meticulously maintained by the first owner.  I’ve been less attentive to her brightwork but it is in good condition.  I refinished the tiller and cockpit sole, and added maintenance coats on the other brightwork.  The exterior teak is finished with Sikkens Cetol. The exterior mahogany is varnished with Interlux Schooner. The teak deck (which is roughly 1/2 inch thick) is very well maintained.

1981 PSC Hull number 117. Custom built for the prior owner from a PSC hull by Nimphius Boat Works.  Please google “Nimphius Boat Company” to learn more about the builder and to find a link to the 1984 television program Charles Kurault's “On the Road” featuring Red Nimphius and his work.  Different Drummer was on site during the filming (though not featured) in 1984.

Engine: The original 30HP Yanmar 3HM has been problem free.  Unknown engine hours. Main fuel tank 36 gal. Auxiliary fuel 12 gal.

Stainless steel water tanks (dairy quality… she was built in Wisconsin). 50 gal under forward v-berth.  50 gl under quarter berth.

Every so often one comes across a sailboat that is truly special, usually because of a combination of factors, such as history, pedigree, an investment of care and love, and the potential it holds for the future. This is undoubtedly such a sailboat. She was delivered to her first and only owners in the spring of 1984, launched at Sheboygan Harbor into the clean waters of Lake Michigan. Over the next thirty-four years, she would call into every single harbor of this lake except Michigan City; she would also never leave the lake, giving her the elusive and extremely desirable status of being a bona-fide one-owner freshwater boat. Tiller steering was chosen after a conversation with Bill Crealock, who recommended it, and the teak decks and semi-custom interior layout reflected the family’s cruising ambitions, as well as a desire to have a boat that was different - a cut above the rest. Today, as one approaches her from the dock, the first thought is how pretty she is; the graceful, understated sheer, the canoe stern, her dorade vents and teak fittings gleaming in the sun. In the same moment one is struck by her purposefullness, the evident strength in her looks, with the no-nonsense portholes, the cutter rig, the well-protected cockpit. That is the magic trick she pulls, blurring the lines between form and function- how could such a pretty boat be up for some of the most serious bluewater sailing anyone could dream of? Underway, she is poised, dry, and responsive, with a comfortable motion in almost any sort of sea state; she is also fast, balancing a large amount of sail area with a modified full keel, and allowing her respectable daily runs whether she is crossing the Lake or out on a day-sail. Below decks, she offers ample seating, a good sea-berth, a real galley, and enough storage for months of provisioning. Hatches and portholes provide excellent ventilation, and her V-berth is safe and snug. The owner proudly claims that there is not a nut, not a wire, not a piece of plumbing that he cannot access, and even a cursory inspection reveals what kind of care and maintenance has gone into the ownership of this boat over the years. All the original paperwork is available, including MSO, and receipts. She represents today one of the greatest values anywhere in the country, a true ocean cruiser with an impeccable record, and is available for your inspection on the hard near the IL-WI border.

I’d like to see Different Drummer go to someone who appreciates her lineage and pedigree.  She deserves a good home, and I do believe she wants to dip her rails in salt water!
